Paper trusted itself. Files don't.

A notarized paper original carries its own evidence — a raised seal, an ink signature, a bound page. Once it becomes a file, that evidence has to be rebuilt some other way.

The copy forgets its source

A PDF looks identical whether it came off a notary's scanner or out of an image editor. Nothing in the file itself says which.

Re-scanning, cropping, or re-saving a document can quietly erase or alter a page with no visible sign it ever happened.

From glass to sealed record

01 — Capture

Scan the original

The document is scanned on hardware that fingerprints the capture session — device, sensor, timestamp — as it happens.

02 — Hash

Fingerprint the page

Each page is reduced to a cryptographic hash. Change one pixel later and the hash no longer matches — there's nowhere to hide an edit.

03 — Manifest

Bind a C2PA record

A signed manifest is bound to the file: who captured it, when, with what device, and any tool that has touched it since.

04 — Seal

Apply the notarial seal

A notary's credential is attached to the chain, so the document carries both a technical and a legal record of authenticity.

Built on C2PA, not a private format

C2PA — the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity — is the open standard that Notary Scanner uses to record a file's history. It specifies a signed manifest, cryptographically bound to a file, that records where it came from, what tools touched it, and every edit made along the way.

Each conforming edit adds a new manifest that references the one before it, so the whole history chains together instead of any single step standing alone. Checking a document means recomputing its hash, comparing it against the manifest, and validating the certificate that signed it.

We chose an open standard on purpose. A notarized record that only our own software can read isn't much of a record — because Content Credentials are standards-based, they hold up across platforms, not just inside Notary Scanner.

The specification is maintained by a coalition of major technology and media companies, with a formal conformance program that vendors can join to certify their tools — which is part of why it travels well.

Provenance is bigger than one file

C2PA proves a single document's history. Provenance is what happens when you need to prove a whole chain of them — over years, across parties who've never met.

What the manifest carries

Every capture, edit, and signature stays attached to the file itself — readable by any C2PA-conforming tool, not just ours.

  • Capture device and timestamp

  • A hash chain linking each version to the last

What long-term custody adds

Documents that outlive a single hard drive — deeds, estate records, corporate filings — need a record that survives storage migrations, re-scans, and format changes too. Rather than relying on any one party's servers to keep that history intact, a document's provenance record can be anchored to an independent, tamper-evident ledger that any party can check without asking our permission first.
